GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 22, 2024) – More than 15,000 participants will be in Greensboro, North Carolina this week for the 58th AAU Junior Olympic Games, the largest multi-sport event for youth in the United States.
The 11-day event, July 24 - August 3, will take place at multiple locations, including the Marcus T. Johnson Track at Truist Stadium on the NC A&T State University campus, the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, the Greensboro Aquatic Center, and Kentner Stadium at Wake Forest University.
This is Greensboro's third time hosting the AAU Junior Olympic Games, following successful events in 2019 and 2022. The city has already been tabbed to host the event in 2029 and 2033 as well.
“The AAU Junior Olympic Games returning to Greensboro for the third time is a testament to Tournament Town and our city’s commitment as the top youth and amateur sports destination,” said Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Henri Fourrier. “Events like this stimulate local businesses, creating a positive impact throughout the community, reinforcing Greensboro’s reputation as a premier sporting destination.”
The AAU Junior Olympic Games will bring an estimated $67 million to the Triad's local economy, which supports essential services including education, emergency response, and public safety.
Track and field, the biggest sport at the games, expects more than 12,000 athletes. Other events include karate, swimming, gymnastics, jump rope, and field hockey.
“We’re excited to bring the AAU Junior Olympic Games back to Greensboro,” said Jo Mirza, AAU President. “The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau is an invaluable partner in putting on a successful event for our athletes and attendees.”
Notable AAU Junior Olympic Games alumni include 2024 track and field Olympians Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Erriyon Knighton.
